Effort

On Wednesday a friend asked me, Will you ever be satisfied with your running times or will you always think you can do better?”  Well that’s a tough question to answer. First, I know I can have a faster half and full marathon time. I’ve just never been able to get to the start line healthy. And second, there will always be the what ifs of the world. What if I had trained a little harder, eaten a little better, or slept a little more? What if I had just tried harder?

But I was able to answer my friend’s question with a very honest answer that actually put my running heart at ease. I told her it all comes down to effort. As long as I know I tried my hardest, gave it all I had, and left nothing out there on the course – only then would I be satisfied. One of my favorite quotes (and the tag line on my blog) reads: “Because effort – nobody can judge effort. Effort is between you and you. If tomorrow wasn’t promised, what would you give for today?” – Ray Lewis. Those few words have truly helped me to understand that my best may not always be the best but it is always my best.

And as fate would have it, Mario just happened to share this poem with me yesterday. This is for you Mark 🙂

The Road Ahead or The Road Behind
by George Joseph Moriarty

Sometimes I think the Fates must
Grin as we denounce and insist
The only reason we can’t win
Is the Fates themselves that miss

Yet there lives on an ancient claim
We win or lose within ourselves
The shining trophies on our shelves
Can never win tomorrow’s game
You and I know deeper down
There’s always a chance to win the crown

But when we fail to give our best
We simply haven’t met the test
Of giving all, and saving none
Until the game is really won

Of showing what is meant by grit
Of fighting on when others quit
Of playing through, not letting up
It’s bearing down that wins the cup
Of taking it and taking more
Until we gain the winning score

Of dreaming there’s a goal ahead
Of hoping when our dreams are dead
Of praying when our hopes have fled
Yet losing, not afraid to fall
If bravely, we have given all

For who can ask more of a man
Than giving all within his span
Giving all, it seems to me
Is not so far from victory

And so the Fates are seldom wrong
No matter how they twist and wind
It is you and I who make our fates
We open up or close the gates
On the road ahead or the road behind.

Here is to an amazing week and to lots of happy running!

Happy Trails and Happy Running

Running Update: I took the day off from running.. However, I made it to the gym for some strength training. My legs and abs needed it.
